Medical Complications in Pregnancy

Medical Complications in Pregnancy Photo

Approximately 3-5% of live births are complicated by a birth defect each year totaling around 120,000 babies. Additionally, more women taking any kind of medication have more than doubled in the last 30 years. Drug use is an uncommon cause of birth defects, but certain medications can increase the likelihood of developing a birth defect. Post term pregnancy is defined as a pregnancy that extends to 42 0/7 weeks and beyond. The reported frequency of post term pregnancy is approximately 3-12%. Risk factors for actual post term pregnancy include primiparity, prior post term pregnancy, male gender of the fetus, and genetic factors. Antepartum stillbirths account for more perinatal deaths than either complications of prematurity or sudden infant death syndrome. Hyperemesis gravidarum is the most severe form, which may cause volume depletion, electrolytes and acid-base imbalances, nutritional deficiencies, and even death. Severe hyperemesis requiring hospital admission occurs in 0.3-2% of pregnancies. Polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (PEP), first described as pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP), refers to a benign dermatitis that usually arises late in the third trimester of a first pregnancy. Psychosocial and Environmental Pregnancy Risks can also affect the pregnancy.
