Worldwide, some 20-30 million legal abortions are performed annually, with another 10- 20 million abortions performed illegally. More than 40% of all women will end a pregnancy by abortion at some time in their reproductive lives. Early pregnancy loss, or miscarriage, is the loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks. In the first trimester, embryonic causes of spontaneous abortion are the predominant etiology and account for 80-90% of miscarriages. Patients with spontaneous complete abortion usually present with a history of vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, and passage of tissue. After the tissue passes, the vaginal bleeding and abdominal pain subsides. Ectopic pregnancy, which ultimately ends in the death of the fetus. Without timely diagnosis and treatment, ectopic pregnancy can become a life-threatening situation.
